The international conference Christians in the Islamic World: History, Present, and Future focuses on the historical, theological, cultural, and social dimensions of the existence of Christian communities in Islamic contexts. Its aim is to create a scholarly forum for reflection on relations between Christianity and Islam, the history of Christian communities in Muslim societies, and the diverse forms of coexistence, dialogue, witness, tension, and mutual influence between the two religious traditions. Attention will be given not only to Christian perceptions of Islam and the Muslim world, but also to Muslim attitudes towards Christians and to their theological, legal, social, and cultural understanding in different historical periods and geographical contexts.
The conference welcomes contributions dealing with the history of Christianity in the Islamic world, Christian-Muslim relations, the theology of interreligious dialogue, spirituality, significant figures, cultural heritage, forms of coexistence and conflict, as well as the contemporary challenges faced by Christian communities in Islamic contexts. The conference will also address future perspectives of Christian presence in the Muslim world, particularly with regard to questions of religious identity, freedom of religion, migration, social transformation, political contexts, and the possibilities of interreligious cooperation.
The conference is open to scholars from the fields of theology, religious studies, history, philosophy, sociology, political science, cultural studies, and other related disciplines. Its purpose is to foster interdisciplinary discussion on the past, present, and future of Christians living in a space marked by encounter, dialogue, and tension with the Islamic world.
